So what happens in this system during a write? Well, anything happens. It really is quite magical. While the global lock is held, a Wasmtime runtime is used to execute “reducers” (arbitrary user code, compiled to WebAssembly). While the reducer is executing, no other reducers can execute and write to the database. No other code can read from the database either. From their official documentation, reducers “cannot perform HTTP requests”. Yeah. No shit.
